The Title/Cover Draw:
I needed a book recommended to me by someone else for a challenge in the book club. I have never read Samantha Downing and heard good things about this thriller.
What I liked:
It was fast paced and unfolded very logically before your eyes. But also… sneaky little twists.
What I didn’t like:
I kinda guessed part of the ending. But that doesn’t bother me too much. It was really well written and nothing was unnecessarily included so that made up for it.
The Characters:
The main character was the perfect humble diversion. Even when he was not always doing something straight forward, you still believed him.
The Ending:
I guessed it. But also there was a moment where I had to go back and listen again.
The Narrator:
David Pittu narrated this and even at fast speed he was easily understandable. I really enjoyed the book more because of this.
Reminds me of:
BA Paris thrillers.

All thoughts and opinions are my own.

4.5 stars, but I’m feeling generous

What a creepy, strange, horribly good book. It feels weird to say I enjoyed it because of the subject, but it was a fast, compelling read with many twists and turns - some I saw coming and some that were a good surprise. It wasn’t perfect, but it was pretty great.

Books don't often give me the creeps--but the couple in this book gave me the creeps. Mystery-thrillers that I've read aren't often told from the perspective of the psychopath killing innocent women. But, that's what Downing's done in this novel. Our main character and his wife Millicent keep the romance alive in their marriage by...torturing and killing women they choose together. When the back of the book called "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" meets "Dexter," they weren't wrong. It lost a star, ultimately, because of the unfurling of the plot and the lack of something fresh. (Also with that said, the last page revived me a bit, though).

3 / 5 stars

3 stars because I only got invested in the story after the plot twist and that's only about the last third of the book. That last third though... it was wild, intense, literally everything I picked up this book hoping for. The rest was kind of boring, just the minutiae of everyday family life for Millicent and her husband with murderous plots between them sprinkled in.

Anyways I can't say much else without getting spoilery. I might come back and add some more to this review once I've had more time to think on it, but for now I'm gonna leave it here because I honestly think if you're interested in reading this you should go in knowing as little as possible (the best way to read a thriller).

This seemed like a really interesting premise to me. I was intrigued by the criminal minds-esque plot, but the execution was lacking in my opinion. This felt more like a domestic thriller than it was marketed as.
I called the twist about halfway through the book, but I didn’t like the way the book ended.

A great thriller that made you think and didn’t just lay it all down in front of you from the start. Kept me on my toes throughout

Enjoyable, but soapy towards the end and not excellently paced. The narration developed the characters quite well, which made the story intriguing despite a slow plotline, but this was all tossed away after the twist. Ultimately underwhelming.
