I went in to this book based on it being Danmei, and while I did adore the hints of a relationship we got in the first book, it was for sure the story that kept me going. The world feels thought out, the stakes are mile high and in the middle of it all we have a main character that is alien to the human world. This makes him a great character to follow in the dystopian world because the need to explain the setting feels natural even with some info dumps.

Really really surprised me in how good this book is. There were a few clunky translation errors, but overall, it was such a lovely experience and the translator really did well. I think it's really difficult to convey the culture and writing of one language into another, so there are a lot of social norms and speaking conventions that don't make the most sense when read in English, but still just a stunning job overall.

Apart from the translation, omg did part one of the book have me hooked! If I had to rate just that part, I'd give it a 5 star rating.
It's not that the second part was bad, but it didn't reach the highes that part one of the book did. The apocalypse setting, and the explanation is fascinating, I loved reading about the outer city, it's flawed humanity, I think it's why the Main city didn't hit as much. The main city had this called sterile feel to it, more techno dystopian than the rough "attack on titan" kind of feel that the outer city had.

I also miss the side characters, they really fall like flies in this series, make me scared to get attached to anyone 😭.

No but really, I love love love An Zhe, he is such a lovable mushroom, and I really enjoy the kind of morality and ethics that is explored in this series. Even though there is that relationship between An Zhe and Lu Feng, it's not center focus, and we get to explore so much of this mutated and broken world and the humans that persevere through it.

I will probably finish the second part either this or next week, but I already can't wait to reread the new translation coming from SevenSeas next year.

I love me some dystopian, end of the world stories <3

2nd reading: Utterly brilliant! This dystopia is so innovative: the MC is a mushroom. As a result, he is so innocent, gentle and cute (yet definitely not stupid) that my heart was melting the entire time. I love how the writing style is peculiar. I don't know if it has been made on purpose or not, but it feels a bit unnatural (inhuman) and absolutely appropriate according to the context. And did I mention how Lu Feng is so cool?
