I wish I would have read this for the first time as a kid rather than as a 27 year old. I have a feeling I would have lost my damn mind over it back then. But somehow I have managed to miss all twenty million bajillion of Pierce's books.

As it is now, I enjoyed this book, but the writing is very simplistic, obviously tailored for younger people, and this was pre-Harry Potter, back when publishers thought all kids had ADD and wouldn't read anything longer than 200 pages, with large print. Lots of stuff was glossed over that I would have liked to have seen elaborated on. It's a short book, and it covers over two years of Alanna's life. The chapter that got the worst of this was the last, "The Black City," with a rather intense battle that comes out of nowhere and is over almost as soon as it starts. But the main draw of this series is the characters. Alanna herself is a badass, and the male characters are just as awesome.

Now I have to track down and devour the remaining three books, which isn't as easy as it sounds because my library is being a total butthead about it.

FANTASTIC! Just as fun of a read as when I was a child. Love love love and cannot wait to listen to the rest of this series (so sad that my library doesn’t have the second one immediately available but I’ll master some patience) just so well written and fun for a children’s book but still has so much intrigue

Actual Rating 4.75

I am so proud of Alanna. I actually cried at the ending from pride for my girl. That aside I couldn't give this one quite five stars because the beginning was pretty slow and while the ending was great certain aspect of it felt a little too convenient. That aside I adored all of the characters and the world and I cannot wait to continue on with the series because I am in love with Alanna as a character! What a queen.

wish I would’ve read this one when I was a kid, I would’ve absolutely loved it. But even now as an adult I had a really fun time reading this. You have to keep in mind that this book is middle grade / early YA and came out in the 80s but I could really see why this series is considered as one of the most fundamental YA series, especially for girls or (gender) queer kids. I honestly loved meeting Alanna and am curious to see where her story goes.

Turns out I still love this book, many years later.

Very quick YA.
