I love Alanna, she is a fantastic protagonist. But although I've heard this story was cut back for its middle grade audience, I would have LOVED a much more in-depth slower-paced and more detailed version of this story. I will happily read the other three books in this quartet one day though.

Honestly, stylistically I'm not sure this book deserves more than a four, being written for a very young audience and thus somewhat simplistic in style. And oddly paved. BUT. It is just so important. The messages, the characters, the meaning of this book is just phenomenal. So many young women have read this amazing, brave story and found out truths about themselves. It is a responsible, feminist novel for young women which made history. It is a huge chunk of young life, and it could not have been in better hands. All my future nieces and nephews will receive copies of these books; they are that wonderful.
Reread 12/4/23: it’s gotten to the point where these aren’t books I’d give to a kid of that age first, but they are STILL PERFECT TO ME.
