This was a nostalgic read for me. I read this book as a kid and am surprised at how well it stood up.
This is fantastic YA that includes magic, sword fighting, and a heroine you can’t help but love. The book moves quickly and is engaging throughout. Definitely something I would recommend to any young reader

I've not read much Pierce, to my eternal shame, but this was fun. Alanna is a delightfully complex and wild creature, and there's never any hand-holding about her hardness or softness. I would have adored this had I read it as a child.

I’m re-reading this series, a childhood favorite, for the first time in over 2 decades. I’m delighted to report that it holds up—it’s just as good as I remember it. Tamora Pierce was an early inspiration for my love of fantasy reading and writing and re-discovering this series feels like coming home.

I listened to the audio on the way to and from work, and was disappointed when I arrived at either destination, even sitting in my driveway before pausing the story!
I got those little flutters of excitement that I've only ever really had with the Harry Potter series. HARRY-POTTER-FLUTTERS, people.
My 13 year-old self really missed out on this one!

I fell in love with Tamora Pierce as a kid. The Alanna series inspired an interest in the middle ages and writing which never went away. This may not be a perfect book - especially as it's Pierce's first and she was very young - but it will always be perfect to me.
