I really enjoyed this book. I've never read this particular series, but I'm invested in figuring out what happens next. This series doesn't seem quite as mature as other sections of the Tortal chronicles, but it was enjoyable none the less.

I am quite late to the Alanna party, but had a fab time with it. It’s a book I have no doubt I’d have loved if I’d read it as a child. I did want more though so it’s a good job I’ll be getting to the sequels soon!

Easy teen read. Kinda like She's the Man but for knights hah. A recommendation from Jenay as one of her childhood favorites :)

One of my favorite childhood reads. I was fortunate enough to watch Tamora Pierce grow as a writer with each new book she released and I have loved most of her series that take place in this world. All of her main characters are strong, confident women, therefore I recommend this book to any young girl (and even adult).

I'm excited to begin on this Alanna journey because I feel left out of this fantasy classic. It has a lot of my favorite tropes like secret identity, badass female main character, found family, and more. As this is an introduction to Alanna's story, I was still hoping for a little faster paced story. Less training and more dramatics if you will.

That being said I'm a sucker for this "switching roles" storyline where she is in disguise with all the boys and training to be a knight. I want to learn more about her adventures, the prince, and the thief, George, so I will be continuing in the series!
