I fell in love with Tamora Pierce as a kid. The Alanna series inspired an interest in the middle ages and writing which never went away. This may not be a perfect book - especially as it's Pierce's first and she was very young - but it will always be perfect to me.

oh alanna you would’ve loved testosterone /hj

fr tho I love alanna, there rlly is something transgender about her tho maybe i think so bc im nonbinary and reading this through a modern lens. who’s to say.

love that she ends up being the prince’s sword, love that trope, and im glad their relationship is strictly platonic! i also like how frank the talk of periods, and i appreciate alanna’s reaction to it all bc sometimes that shit just sucks and that’s the truth! i don’t blame her for wanting to get rid of it lmao

the only thing that icked me out was the immortal ppl making alanna naked towards the end. obviously they’re bad guys so they’re gonna do bad shit, but that doesn’t mean I gotta like it☝🏾 im sure there were better ways to do her gender reveal but whatever.

This was so fun. I love the way Tamora writes young girls as the delightfully complex, flawed, and growing creatures they are. I also love the way she writes determination in her characters, it makes me cry every time.

I did find the pacing strange and a little confusing, with big time jumps that were ill-described. Other than that this was just about perfect.

meh, might continue with the books for popcorn reading or call it a day with this one. nothing extraordinary, and while i'm sure this was a milestone for its time in sff, it is at times quite dated at this point

I always enjoy Tamora Pierce. She has such a way with making her characters feel like real people. This book is no exception. Alanna is a fabulous character, with such depth and real feelings that you can't help but root for her. I love this series and can't wait to go on to the next one!
