Read it in one sitting. What a delight! I can't believe these passed me by as a kid.

Audiobook reread. My childhood heroine revisited. This is the fantasy adventure book that I still compare all others too. Narrator was just okay.

I’m completely biased. This is the book I first was handed over twenty years ago by a 7th grade classmate. This was the book that introduced me to women as heroes and warriors. This is the book that made me want to be a writer and show other young women how heroic we are.

While this may be a petty reason, I feel I would have given this one more star if I had only had a better edition of it. It's a mixture of adventure, fantasy, and maturation series, and I felt this had a really good set up and I am super excited to read the next ones. However, the mass market paperback I had did absolutely nothing to help me love this more, and I would have preferred a more pleasing font (is it really that hard to change the font???)

But in any case, still wonderful, and it's hard for me to not fall in love with Alanna and her insistence to do things the way she believes they should be done. Though she has understandable self-esteem issues throughout much of the book, she really begins to come into her own as time goes on.

The Song of the Lioness book 1: Alanna

4⭐
The first quartet in publication order and second series in chronological. You can definitely feel a difference. The pacing in this quartet, in comparison to the much later published Bekka Cooper series, is much faster. I would hazard a guess that she took Keladry's  story and wrote a slower pace because she wasn't able to in this very first one.
And still, the fantasy is rich and characters are vibrant.  A running conversation in my circles is giving grace to debut novels. But some, like this one, do not need it. Fantastic fantasy
