This is a really cute first book in this series. Not only did it introduce the characters and this world, it really made me want to continue to read it's other books. I was not sure what to expect as I did not pick it myself but became intrigued by the nerdy girl at the library who seemed to love all of Tamora Pioerce's books so much she could not stop raving about them. It was clear that they were also the inspiration for her to create a series of her own. It did seem a bit rushed in parts but on the other hand it moved at a nice pace that made you keep reading without having the story drag or halt itself for pages of explanations (one of the classic faults of some adult fantasy.
