very much enjoyed this book — third book of cbk’s that i’ve read.
not a must-own for me, but would definitely grab it if I found it at the thrift.
loved learning about a period of history that isn’t commonly covered in historical fiction.
would definitely recommend for historical fiction fans that aren’t super-niched into a specific era.

"She was about to learn what it was like to be contemptible."
Third time's a charm with this book for me. After 2 false starts I'm glad to finally see this one through.
Incredibly disheartening, maddening, and inspiring are the words I would use to describe this fictional retelling of real life people and events. I spent the whole book wanting to scream at the injustice of these ladies' lives.
Although the author stays true to the desperate lives of these women, I feel like she sent each person off with a dignified resilience. As with all of Christina Baker Kline's novels, I am now in the middle of researching this topic and educating myself on the horrors that these people endured.

The history of the colonization of Australia was not something I had prior knowledge of. The author clearly did a lot of research and that elevated this book. I definitely enjoyed learning this piece of history, but is struggled to find an emotional attachment to the characters. I thought Mathinna had the most interesting storyline, but it was not explored enough and was kind of dropped from the plot at a certain point.
