Absolutely wonderful book! A blend of mystery, art, cooking and a dash of romance, but don't paint this book as pure romance from the title. It's about people and their secrets, and the past and present colliding. I loved it, and went on to buy it for several other people.

Too many characters that really was of no consequence. I couldn’t seem to care for any of the characters and there was so much in there was really wasn’t necessary?!

The premise sounded a lot better than what it really ended up being.

I only really enjoyed the last few chapters from 33ish because at least there was a little excitement as to if Annie would make it out … but overall disappointed with this.

My goodness I hated this book. I must have missed something because there are positive reviews and it was shortlisted for the Bailey's Prize but what a waste of time. It wasn't even that fun to hate. I could go through all the reasons why but this review did it for me:

I am sad to say I can’t give a rating to something I haven’t been able to finish and sadly this book is one of them. I do love books that involve a long list painting, romance and historical information and of course paintings that have feelings, but this doesn’t really work as it all feels forced and cobbled together, theirs too much of everything going on and a lot of characters that just meander around like lost souls. I found there is only really a basic plot which has been fudged over again and again till it’s barely there. What I sort of liked about it and wished there was more of was the painting itself, but it gets lost amongst a rather weird and bizarre love story which doesn’t really have a point to it. I didn’t like any of the characters nor did I feel any empathy for any, it all felt a bit bland and sadly disappointing.
slow-paced
Strong character development: No

Bit of a slog. So many characters I struggled to keep up, and too clean an ending.

Interesting premise, but the execution was a little clunky at times. I enjoyed the fact that the painting was a narrator
