i pretty much knew the main core of this story before i started reading it which definitely affected my experience because i wasn’t necessarily as surprised by some of the elements as i might have been going in blind. really enjoyed it as much as you can enjoy like…. such an incredibly heartbreaking and harrowing read. also always invested in complex and fraught parent child relationships and its one of the themes that’s most likely to provoke an emotional reaction from me. i watched a couple of emezi interviews and it’s interesting to read so many reviews of the book expressing a wish that they’d made their opinion on the incest plot clear when they specifically wanted to provoke divisive and strong reactions from the audience by not speaking on it. also clearly a very different and specific nigerian culture element in terms of very close relationships with extended family. not that i necessarily agree with their reasoning but it’s part of their writing identity so i understand. interested to read more of their work

This is such a beautiful book about the complexity of human's identity in a society that cannot accept, societally and legally, a different sexual orientation or different physical presentation, in a society were men ought to look like men and women like women. The writing is very good. The only minus point is the incest which, to me, is romanticized when it should not be.
