 Outlawed is a Western/alternative history cross genre novel . Ada is a young woman, unable to conceive. When faced with accusations of witchcraft she is forced to flee. Initially she seeks refuge in a convent but religious life is not for her so she hooks up with a band of other outcasts. They steal to stay alive but eventually hope to build a community where others like them can live without fear. This story highlighted the trauma of infertility but Ada’s focus was on finding a meaningful life for herself outside of motherhood and seeking knowledge to overcome ignorant prejudice. Race and gender identity are also incorporated. A fresh, fun, feminist take.

I don't typically go for historical fiction, but this one was a feminist story with many LGBTQ+ characters, so I really wanted to give it a try. I will say, the western storyline was not as dry as I thought it was going to be at all. I typically don't care for westerns, but the plot was beautifully interwoven into the setting, which made for a very enjoyable read. I appreciated that the author didn't shy away from difficult topics; the characters were strong and unapologetic. Having a diverse cast of characters was very appealing to me as well. 

I definitely recommend this read; however, please be aware of the TW/CW (listed below).

I generally liked this book.  The story moves at a quick pace and I liked a lot of the characters.  There were a few moments were I wish we slowed down and spent a little bit more time in spots, but that's not a huge criticism.  I really liked that this was a female-centric story set in the wild west that DOES NOT take place in a brothel.  That said, I feel like as far as "a Western" goes, I think the book missed its mark a little.  But again, that's a really small detail to pick at and it certainly didn't take anything away from the story.  This book was fun.  Would recommend.

It was a good book but it should've been longer, I felt like I didn't get to know the characters as well as I should have and some characters felt like I never really did get to know them even if they told their backstory. I like that they had a bisexual guy though that was nice to see as bi men are extremely underrated I'm not a bi guy though so I can't tell you if he was good representation or not.
