Had I stopped four chapters (chapter 5 is when it got interesting) in like I thought about doing, I would have missed a thoroughly entertaining book! The beginning was confusing, but once I got to chapter 25 or 26, it all began to wrap up and those first chapters made so much sense. I truly enjoy this "mystery" it may not have answered all my questions, but it certainly changed my initial opinion of it. Dirk was not the character I thought he was going to be, he is actually very intelligent, and yet, he is still very odd, but fitting for the story. In fact, all of them Reg, Richard, Susan, Gordon, and Michael ended up being fascinating characters that I enjoyed getting to know. I am sure the second book will be very entertaining as well!

I wish they did half stars on here, because this was probably a 3.5 for me.
In this book, holistic detective Dirk Gently helps programmer Richard MacDuff tie together a number of loose threads by looking beyond the possible.
Thankfully a bit slower on the gags than Hitchhiker's which makes a nice change of pace. If you watch the Netflix series before this (which I would also recommend to you as it's wonderful), it's certainly worth having this destinctly British alternative.

Just finished listening to the BBC full-cast audio edition. Generally I'm not a big fan of full-cast readings, but this was definitely one that I enjoyed quite a bit.
At times the humor was a bit much but it was definitely an adventure that kept me on my mental toes. And underneath all the humor were some touching questions, as per usual for Adams.
