Well this is definitely in the Douglas Adams style. That is to say that it is extraordinarily weird. I'm not sure that I understood half of what happened...
I don't know what I expected exactly, but it's not as funny as I hoped it would be. It has its moments of great absurd humor, but at times, it felt so tedious. The ending ties up neatly with the beginning and the middle, but it also felt like a blur, a whizzing past my head.

I just want to say, that there is a scene with an immovable couch that reminded me of the scene from Friends. Adams had a grand time describing it and I laughed aloud reading it. Very funny, and different from the other Dirk Gently book. Definitely recommend for fans of Douglas Adams.
This book is about Dirk Gently, a self-styled private investigator, who sets out to prove the fundamental interconnectedness of everything. I picked this book up for 20p at a local market which was amazing although the condition of my copy isn't very good but for that price, who would turn that down?!
The plot overall is quite a confusing one but captivating all the same. The story includes a mysterious mrder, pizza, professors and quantum mechanics, amongst other strange and wonderful things. Although in parts I got a bit lost, I found this very entertaining and it raises interesting and thought-provoking ideas about the universe.
I love the characters in this book. They're all very eccentric and strange but this adds to the mystery and excitement of the plot. I really like the intelligence of the characters, especially Dirk and Richard, because it creates intrigue and makes you really think about subjects that I, personally, wouldn't know about.
I have never read any of Douglas Adams' work and have only seen The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and will definitely be reading the book after reading this one. I found his writing captivating although very technical at some points. I enjoyed the short chapters even though the book itself is only 247 pages long.
Overall, I would give this book 4 out of 5 stars because although I enjoyed it, the ending wasn't as good as I thought it should be. I enjoyed the sci-fi aspect and the mystery too, and will definitely be reading more of Douglas Adams' books.

This book is brilliantly crafted as are all of Douglas Adam's books that I have read. Brimming with wit and not without a well crafted story. If you enjoyed any of the Hitchhiker's Guide books, don't skip this one. It's a perfect blend of Adam's humor that runs throughout the Hitchhiker series, mixed with elements of Sherlock Holmes and the backbone of a Doctor Who episode. Brilliant. Can't say it enough. If you don't believe me, there is an Electric Monk that will do it for you. Cheers.

I read this book when I was 15 and I loved it so much. I am not interested in testing if it holds up, that would be like reevaluating if your childhood pet really was that loveable.
3.5 stars.
I know I read this before, but I have little to no memory of the experience. I don't know why. This story is wacky good fun in the way only a Douglas Adams story could be with holistic detectives, electric monks, annoyed horses, breaking and entering, wayward ghosts, angry secretaries, and other oddities. Quite humorous and enjoyable, as long as you don't get lost along the way.
In related news, I've just learned that there is a Dirk Gently miniseries. Based on the trailer, the miniseries tries to play it as straight as possible and there doesn't seem to be evidence of the science fiction elements from the novel, but I would have to watch the series to be sure, which I am certainly willing to do.
