Fun to read and with a plot line that's somewhat easier to follow than those in the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy.
Light yet a deep, page-turner book.
Thats my first Douglas Admas read and it has been a really long time since I enjoyed reading a book like I did this one. When you start to read a lot for different authors and different style, it starts to become harder to impress you, and it becomes harder for you to find books that you really love, but clearly Douglas Adams is not just any author and his books are becoming classic for a reason.
The way he develops the characters and how they start at completely separate points but end up so simply entwining is what was most entertaining about the book. I can't say that I completely understood the ending though I like the confusion it left me in. It also seems from the reviewers here that most readers enjoy "not understanding the ending". It is clearly one of those book that you have to read again once you know how it ends and although I'm not the kind of person who rereads book, I'll gladly do it for this one.

I read this one years ago but couldn't remember much about it so I thought it was about time I read it again. Now the Rime of the Ancient Mariner references make much more sense to me, although I'm sure it'll take a few more read throughs to get exactly how Dirk managed to save the human race.
Basically the same old Douglas Adams nonsense, which, if you picked up the book, you probably already expected and, in fact, enjoy. So. It was very Douglas Adams-y.

Maybe a 3.5. I suspect I may like the second book more. This one was not structured the way I expected which led me to not get into it at the beginning and I got a bit lost, so it's difficult to rate it. I did really enjoy some of the concepts though and it's quirky as ever. There was some great commentary, although I felt like the witty prose was not as abundant, but again that could have been my fault with the way I read it.

This book doesn't have an ending so much as a cliffhanger. There's no conclusion at the end, it's just a teaser for the next one. Adams's writing style is what saves this book. Regardless of the plot's pacing, I still love the way he writes.
