Lots of childhood nostalgia for me. Game of thrones meets cats

Having been on the internet for quite a while, i have noticed this series being talked about A LOT. i've always wondered what the hell was the appeal and decided that I should give the first book and try and see if i can tell what all the hubbub is about. And....i don't really see it.

Now i'm walking into this book as an adult with no nostalgic bias whatsoever so that might be the issue. i didn't read this in my childhood as i was slightly too old for the series when it released and JUST got around to it. That being said, what about the book standing on its own merits?

So first of all, i don't like the main character Firepaw. He's WAY too gungho about leaving his homelife to go live in the wild. like there's barely any thought to this. He has a dream about running free and goes "I'M GONNA GO LIVE IN DA WILD!" and that's about all his internal struggle. It's very basic and not very well written. He's also really quick at picking up stuff and is nearly immediately loved by everyone in the new clan. very Gary Stu-ish.

The plot itself is very basic. There's cat clans and one of the clans called shadow clan is being a dick and trying to take over. Cats die, Firepaw helps save the day. That's really all there is to it.

I really tended to lose track of the cats as there are SO MANY characters that they actually have to have a character legend in the beginning of the book. like there's probably around 30 speaking characters. one dies and i'm like "oh no! not.. (flips back to the character legend) THAT guy!" I get they're trying to show it's a vibrant community, but it gets a little overwhelming at times.

I'm giving this book a TINY bit of leeway since it IS the first book in the series and needs a little time to get going, so i'll read the second book and see if it gets any better without the need to explain everything to the audience.

Not SUPER excited for the next one, but i'll be reading it. I've read better animals being animals in the wild books before. this is a big ol' meh.

3 out of 5.

C'est une relecture, et je l'ai autant appréciée que ma première lecture ! La Guerre des Clans n'est PAS une saga pour enfants.

Re-reading this as an adult 10+ years later reminds me of when I fell in love with reading 🥲 these books are SO GOOD and hold up SO WELL.

I finally had to read this after years of watching fifth graders fall into this series. I totally know why it's a hit and found a fandom. However, I was going to lose it if I heard any more about "sharing tongues", and I could not remember one more character with paw/claw/star in their name. It drove me insane, but it would make a great gateway into being a grownup fantasy reader - so I can't be that mad at any book that gets kids to gobble up a full series after series of feline world building.

I first started reading this book series when I was around late elementary/junior high age, and I just adored them. My mom had to tell me to check out the next three books at a time because I was blowing through them so quickly.

Fast forward 15 years, and now I’m an elementary school teacher. I wanted to introduce my students to series that I used to read that they might not be familiar with, and I only planned on reading Into The Wild for read aloud, and then telling them there were more books to be read before moving onto the next. Reader, my students loved. This. Book. They all loved it so much they begged me to read the second one, and I’m a sucker for this story universe, so why not? We read the second, and they just keep asking me to read more and more of them. I was able to loop with many of my kids from last year, and they came back STILL wanting to stay in the Warriors world. We’re on book 3 of The New Prophecy.

Now, as an adult I have a whole new appreciation for our main character. The growth he shows, and his conviction to do what’s right, he’s just the epitome of goodness and I could go on and on about how much I love these characters. But the best review comes from one of my students. These books inspired him to seek out more books like this. A kid who entered third grade with little to no interest in reading for fun is now a 4th grader who is now such an avid reader I can barely keep him out of a book. I’m so happy these stories exist, and it is my daily source of joy to have the opportunity to share it with a new generation of readers.
