The third Pema Chodron book on CD that I listened to. 108 is the number of prayer beads on a Buddhist mala. These are 108 short, 2-3 page teachings. A good introduction/overview, and another way of touching on the things she says in the other CDs of hers that I have listened to. Some topics: bodhichitta; the boddhisattva warrior; maitri (loving-kindness); suffering; tonglen; slogans.
This book on CD is not read by Chodron, btw.

Beautifully written book with easily digestible, quick chapters that resonate deeply. I find this book has helped immensely with my meditation, even when I wasn't fluent in some of the terminology, especially in regards to dealing with issues of loss, addiction, and familial strife present in my life. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in developing a meditation practice, regardless of whether or not it is directly related to Buddhism. I am going to pass it on to more than one of my loved ones.

A few years ago I was given The Book of Joy, a conversation between the Dalai Llama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu as a gift. I really enjoyed their insights into how faith intersects with mental and emotional health. When I saw this book, admittedly, I was first attracted to the pretty blue cover. But The Book of Joy got me interested in learning more about Buddhist teachings and practices. Comfortable With Uncertainty is a great starting point. It offers simple yet extremely useful insights into meditation and mindfulness. As the Dalai Llama said in The Book of Joy, we must treat our mind and emotional state like muscles that must be regularly used and exercised if we want them to be strong. Comfortable with Uncertainty provides universally useful teachings regardless of faith along with patient explanations of Buddhist concepts that can be put into practice on the quest for strength of mind and spirit.
But it should be clear what this book is. Essentially, it is an introductory guide to meditation. It is not in any way a replacement for mental health support. But for anyone willing to take an honest look at their mind and learn skills to help cope or adapt or just deal with life, this is a really useful book.

As a person with what I like to call "Rogue Unicorn Issues" (imaginary problems that cause me a lot of anxiety), Pema Chodron's words are very comforting. They offer a sense of mindfulness and peace that I sometimes need to be reminded to tap into.

good teachings, kind of repetitive and boils done to main concepts that were hit at the beginning of the book
great for those just beginning their journey of cultivating compassion or whom compassion does not come naturally.

This book was recommended to me by my meditation coach, and I'm not sure I was quite prepared to accept what was being offered. But, there is a lot of power in this book, a lot of really meaty concepts in the short 108 chapters.
Each of the the chapters is meant to be like a mala bead, something to think about and keep you on track while meditating. But they are really packed with wisdom. Almost too packed, in that I would find myself chewing on a sentence for a long time before moving on to the next one.
This is my first encounter with the author, but I'm certain I will be looking into her other works.

Most are 3-5 paragraphs. Not quite enough for a one per morning routine so ended up reading in blocks.
