(3.75, rounded up) I really liked this book! It took me a while to get through, but the characters and the story were very interesting. I will say however that I did get deeply annoyed at the number of times the words “umber” and “amber” were used to describe someone’s eyes, hair, or skin. Like please… please can we pick a different word…? Also beware if you listen to the audio book on Libby the narrators don’t pronounce all of the characters names the same and it’s SO ANNOYING

The premise of this book has lots of potential with an interesting world/setting, but the pacing is really off. There are long internal monologues that can be whiney and repetitive, and then the action/drama is rushed in three page bursts to the point where I actually thought several times that my e-reader had missed a chapter or skipped pages. The characters aren’t really developed enough for you to care about them, and the main romance never really takes off. I wanted to enjoy it, but it missed the mark for me.

Finally! A book that scratches the itch of 6 of Crows while still maintaining its own identity!

The story is slow, intentionally so, because when everyone finally meets you are so attached to who these people are as individuals that you understand why certain dynamics come to fruition. Some slow burns are like eating a burrito where all the hot sauce has dropped down to the bottom. This is one where each bite is perfectly layered.

What prevents it from being a 5 star is largely just my own emotional response to it. While I do understand the narrative choices behind the pacing, it does get a little bit gummy at times.

This is a good enemies-to-lovers trope, even though the romance is solely a subplot.
There are lots of Urdu/Arabic terms (I'm not quite sure) and Muslim culture in this, a lovely and fresh take on a fantasy series!
