This book is 10x funnier when you imagine Altair al-Badawi as Altaïr Ibn-LaʼAhad from Assassin's Creed.

Altair was the only thing holding this story together, I don't think I would have finished it if I hadn't enjoyed him as much as I did. I'm so disappointed that Zafira is consistently useless (she hits almost all the disappointing female character tropes, i.e. fainting, getting kidnapped, etc.), and Nasir should probably be tried for war crimes when the series ends. I understand that he was horrifically abused, but he also killed a lot of people and I feel like that shouldn't be forgiven. I vividly remember him admiting to killing a mother as she nursed her baby, and that just is not it for me.

What was the point of Zafira dressing as a man? It was not at all important to the story, it barely had any impact. It just felt like a "wow, woman CAN do stuff," moment for like five seconds, and then it was never important again.

This book starts off very slow, but I promise you, if you stick with it, you will not regret it. By the middle of the book, it is fast paced, funny, dark, all the things.

Pretty good, interesting setting, but had some pacing issues. The author pulled inspiration for this book from tales of ancient Arabia, and this invoked nostalgia for me for various stories I read when I was a kid. The world building is very creative and lush. However, the characters didn't work as well for me, and I couldn't get too excited about any of them. There is also not much of a conclusion to this volume, since it basically is just setup for the second book in the duology. I'll be continuing on, since I have to know how the story ends, and I'm hoping that we get enough backstory on the characters to make me more excited about them.

I really liked this book. Enemies to “lovers”, found family, and a kickass FMC, it’s hard to say no!

Well, that was something.
