dnf. The 1 star is an overstatement for this book.

Before I got this book, I checked the reviews on GoodReads b/c I actually trust ppl on here, but HA! Never again! 100 pages into this book, and I still didn't know what was happening. I would've really appreciated it if she put a glossary at the end so I could understand what was happening since there are new (and very unique) words being introduced every few pages. Also, this book's romance was supposed to be good, but no...not at all. This book could've easily been 250-300 pages but it was unnecessarily prolonged and boring. Do not recommend this book, and never listen to Booktok!

Very slow start.
Finally get into it by falling for Deen and his horse named Lemon, only for him to be killed off shortly after. Yasmine is my favorite character, which considering how little she’s in this book actually (she’s not on the adventuring party) should tell me something. There were also a few times where the audiobook narration did not match the printed text. Changes ranged from present tense being read as past tense, the subject going from singular to plural (I to we), and an entire word phrase substitution. I believe these changes only occurred in the female narration.

Biggest feels/Favorite Quotes:
"’Just as there is no man more likely to succeed than the Hunter’ he stopped, and there was another shuddering draw—‘there is no man in Arawiya more loyal to the Hunter than I.’” (p. 133)

"You and I are strangers, Huntress. Allies by circumstance. We may leave Sharr and never think of each other again. But in this moment, we are two souls, marooned beneath the moon, hungry and alone, adrift in the current of what we do not understand. We hunt the flame, the light in the dark darkness, the good this world deserves..." (p. 285).

“Men can be such beautiful trash, Yasmine said in her head with a sigh.“ (p. 312)

And when Zafira is pondering how she goes on now that Benyamin has been killed,  “In this moment, we are two souls, marooned.
But what happened when one soul marooned the other? When death decided to stand between them?” (p. 447).

I really wish this was good but unfortunately it simply was not.
YA in the worst ways — annoyingly and overwhelmingly horny with irritating main characters who were just generally underdeveloped and uninteresting. the writing was too wordy for me and  quite repetitive saying nothing at all in way too many words

Really liked the premise. Was unable to catch on with how slow the pacing was. Will try again in the future.

I was slow to warm up to this book. There was a lot of set-up at the beginning and I wasn’t sure where it was going. But I think that slow beginning was necessary, because once it all clicked into place I ended up really falling in love with it. I really enjoyed the tone of writing style and it helped create such great imagery. The romance was a true slow burn which I loved because by the time I was fed the first little crumb I was desperate. I thought Zafira and Nasir had such great chemistry and I also loved them individually as characters. Once of the other areas where this book really excels is really fleshing out all the other side characters and making you care for them. It’s a perfect book if you love the found family trope! And I loved learning how all the characters end up being connected to each other.

There were some shocking reveals at the end of this book too, so I’m eager to continue on to the second book in this duology soon!

Finally a book I enjoyed! After reading the cruel prince i was losing hope. However, the ending felt a bit rushed, and the author lost their grip on the story a bit. Characters started making weird or nonsensical choices to push the story in a specific direction. It got a bit predictable. Even called it's self out a couple times like the author was aware. Sticking with 4 stars though because I loved the first 3/4 of it.
