It wasn’t entrancing enough I suppose. Maybe I’ll try again in the future

After reading We Hunt the Flame, I have to admit that I feel a bit conflicted about this book. On one hand, the writing was lush and beautiful, the characters were diverse and had interesting backstories, the setting was rich and teeming with life etc. etc. On the other hand, I could not shake the palpable feeling that something was missing. The setup was perfect! A girl hiding behind a cloak and a man's shadow to feed her village. A prince who is feared and shackled by trauma and his father. I wanted so badly to love this book.
Personally, I think more time needed to be spent building the relationships between the characters, particularly our zumra. There were a few meaningful moments, but not nearly enough. Most of it was banter and while fun, it just wasn't enough for me to really feel the emotional impact of some of the events at the end of the book. For a duology, I didn't feel that "I must read the second book now!" feeling that I always hope to crave. I will still be reading the second book because I think Hafsah Faizal is clearly talented and has a lot of potential, but I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking forward to in the next installment. Alsothere were just too many family plot twists at the end. The only one I really welcomed was Altair and Nasir being brothers. Also the Lion of the Night? Definitely could have been set up better. At one point, his name was brought up and I was like, "Who?" .
