A superb example of a child narrator, perhaps even better than Scout from To Kill A Mockingbird. This is a perfect book and an American classic.

I loved the voice of Kit, in spite of the disturbing, and sometimes horrific, story she has to tell. Part Cherokee and part white, Kit, against her will, is a student at a boarding school. In alternating sections, Kit reveals her life at the school and the circumstances which landed her there instead of with her extended family. Kit's amazing spirit imbues her difficult story with hope.

This was a very frustrating read. Written like a journal from the perspective of a little girl, you get only the information people give small children when huge, life altering events are happening. She was sheltered and hidden from the truth, you are sheltered and hidden from the truth. She is abused, you are abused (bit of a warning, it’s very explicit sexual abuse). She is confused and misses things, you are confused and miss things. You are Kit while reading this book, and just like she wants to run away and scream, so do you.

Only 4 stars because sometimes the author rambled just a little too much about things that weren’t necessary. But that’s pretty much just what a little girl’s journal is like, so even that was accurate.
