This is one of those books that I decided to read even though my expectations were low. To say that this book surprised me is an understatement. Wow I didn’t expect this book to be this good! The unbinding of Mary Reade is a story of a young person who is trying to find who they are while living the life of a pirate. We follow her while she gets to know Anne Bonny and the famous Captain calico Jack. Ofcourse this adventure doesn’t turn like supposed to.

The world building has been done beautifully. It feels really accurate for how we invision life in 1719/1720. The characters are lovable but they make mistakes, something that makes them believable. They learn a lot of the span of this book and while reading you see them grow!

Favorite quote:
People wanted to think that everything was black and white. Laws were laws, family was family, right was right and stond was wrong. Boy was boy and girl was girl. Her crew is was good and the pirates were evil. Life had revealed itself to be much more complicated.

I would for sure recommend this to lgbtq history nerds.

DID NOT FINISH

The premise for The Unbinding of Mary Reade sounded great and I was very excited. Lady pirates, yes please! It took me a very long time to write this review, I tried to get into this story at multiple occasions. But after trying for about a year, I think we can conclude I will not finish this book. I'm not interested in the characters, and I'm not really interested in the plot either.
I do enjoy historical fiction a lot, but this one was super boring and the alternating time lines didn't do it for me either. The characters didn't seem to have any chemistry and all in all I just didn't like this at all. I would definitely pick up another book about Mary Reade, because her story seems very interesting but this book couldn't keep me engaged for longer than 3 minutes at a time.

The synopsis of this book sounded interesting. Pirates? Check. Adventure? Check. Badass girl? Check. What it actually was was boring. How can you make pirates boring??? There was no action just angsty love that lacked any chemistry whatsoever. Overall, disappointed. Not much else to say about it.
I received an ARC of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I wanted more from this book. I wanted better. From a technical aspect it is unclear who is speaking sometimes. Too much physical descriptions of unimportant characters and locations that remove you from the story. Its a boring book. A lot of nothing is happening, it took forever to develop. This version of Anne Bonnie does not sit right with me, she is not as independent as I would have hoped. TW: Sexual Assault, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia. I know these elements may have been realistic at the time but I wanted a fun queer pirate story. Either be realistic or be whimsical, this was missing the mark for me. This book was boring and hard to get through. I’m disappointed.
