Another cute, summer-perfect, young-adult book by the fabulous Kasie West. Every time I read one of her books, I fall in love with the idea of being a teenager again, where the world is my oyster.
In Sunkissed, seventeen-year-old Avery and her family go to a family summer camp for 8 weeks the summer before her senior year in high school. While Avery has always been the cool, calm and collected sibling (Laurent being a bucket of laughs and creativity/drama), she is tired of the same ole, same ole. Through watching her sister and hearing about how she is “the calm one” too many times from her parents, Avery decides she is going to own this summer! She decides that she is going to try a bunch of new things to ensure the path she has laid in front of herself is really what she wants, and not merely a continuation of her current course. Enter Brooks, the eighteen-year old camp musician and leader of his band of misfits. With having to provide for his family, Brooks decided earlier this summer he would give his musical aspirations one last shot: if he can win the battle of the bands, he will continue in music; if he can’t, he’ll go home and get a “real job”.
At first sight, Avery and Brooks do not get along, as is the usual formula for a Kasie West novel. He thinks she’s a pretentious snob, while she thinks he’s a jerk. However, they decide that in exchange for Brooks helping her experience new things this summer, she can help him write lyrics for his band, the only part of his plan not currently coming together. But when a lineup change threatens to ruin everything, Avery steps up by stepping out of her comfort zone, both in life and with Brooks.
This perfectly written dose of summer love definitely gives off Dirty Dancing vibes and I'M HERE FOR IT!
4 stars.

I found myself to really love the characters
When I picked up this book, I didn't know it would be so special to me. It took me a few chapters to get into it fully. But I saw myself in the main character and became so invested in her story that by the end, I was crying into my hamburger. "Summer fling" books do not normally do that to me.
