This book was great! It was awesome getting to learn more about the intricacies of Night Vale than is possible with their usual podcast. Especially about the Man in the Tan Jacket with a Deerskin Suitcase!
Clever, but exhaustively so. As the cleverness is slammed at you every line, in every "Look how clever!" moment--AKA every single moment. What it supposed to be lighthearted becomes heavy, trudging, and weighed down by this forced quirk and smartness. More draining than entertaining, but not without a little bit of charm.
I listened to this on and off for a few years, while painting. I really liked the story, got heavily invested in the main characters Jackie and Diane. It had all the trademark weirdo Nightvale stuff, and wrapped up a particular long-running subplot of the podcast (The Man in the Tan Jacket). Nightvale is a good about having heavy emotions wrapped inside the bizarre, and this more long-form narrative was especially adept at that. Much of it was about parent/child relationships. I particularly liked listening to it as an audiobook, as its read by Cecil, both in his and other characters and as a general narrator. Very good stuff. I can now get back to listening to the main podcast where I left off a year or two ago when this came out.
I loved this book. I will say that I listened to it rather than read it. I think that makes a difference. The book is told in the same meandering and bizarre format the podcast has and listening to the book being narrated by Cecil really upped my enjoyment. This book was nonsensical and weird and Night Vale-ian in the best way.
If you enjoy the podcast, I'd recommend this book, but only as it's narrated. I think it would be quite cumbersome to read the winding, perplexing descriptions that take up a large part of the narration.

The humor of this book is just so not for me. DNF'd around 10% of the way through because I'm sick of rolling my eyes and saying, "Ha. Ha. Ha," sarcastically out loud in response to every other sentence.
