Consistently steps on any engagement I could have had with the story. Not sure if you'd call the observations/narration/radio interludes jokes, but they were definitely distracting and a chore to get through.

This book is trying to be weird a little too hard.

I tried. I really did. I started with the audiobook but the narrator's voice was so annoying. When I first heard about the podcast, I was intrigued. I couldn't get past the first episode because of his voice. I don't know why I thought the audiobook would be better.

Then I tried reading the text book. Ooohh, no, it was trying so hard to be edgy, different, strange, sly, twee, etc. Just as obnoxious as the narrator. I like weird stories. I like alternate realities. WTNV has all the hallmarks of being one of my favorites, but it is too much effort and not a lot of substance. If more time was put towards advancing the storyline and not drowning the text in "odd stuff," it would have been more palatable.

Guess I'm just not cool enough to "get" it, but if this is what the cool kids are into, then I'm going to pass and find myself something better conceived and better written.

4.5 stars! Very enjoyable to read--I will have to check out the podcast.

Not great literature, but a whole lot of fun for anyone who enjoys the Night Vale sensibility. While the podcast is framed as a community radio news report, the novel is - as it should be - more expansive, with an wry, omniscient narrator that reminded me of Douglas Adams. It's as playful as the podcast, but also not afraid to get into more heartfelt territory, with characters you'll feel for.

I recently discovered WTNV (the podcast) and was instantly in love with the town and all of its citizens. So as you can imagine , upon hearing about a book, I had to read it straight away! At first, the book felt a but clumsy and awkward to read as it is unusual seeing the writing style and humour written down, let alone reading it rather than listening. However after a few reading out loud sessions i soon got into the swing of the book. The story was a bit haphazard to begin with but the book does a great job of creating characters that you want to invest your feelings in. It was nice to get the perspective of some of the normal citizens as well as incorporating the lovely Cecil and Carlos. The book progressed during the last 150 pages or so and i found myself loving the heartfelt ending and pretty good backstory info about the man in the tan jacket. I am still mid-podcast in the 2014 area so until i get further along I'm not getting to the next book quite yet. So i take you now, dear review readers, to the weather.
