Thank you to Crooked Lane Books and NetGallery for the Kindle Version of the ARC This book is to be published December 10th 2019.

To be honest, I wasn't sure about this book when I started reading. It didn't help that the ARC on the Kindle isn't formatted great. Though, once I was used to that it was a fantastic read.

For those that don't know what this book is about: Heather and her friend were a part of the Dead Girls Club. Obsessed with gore and true crime, there were stories about serial killers and imaginary monsters. This included the Red Lady, a witch killed centuries before. These were just stories to Heather until her best friend, Becca insisted the Red Lady was real. This lead to Becca's death.

So what happened to Becca?

*****
I loved the back and fourth between Heather's tween years in The Dead Girls Club and her current life with a husband and a career. It gave a great contrast between the changes you go through from tween to adulthood.

It had suspense and wonder, making me want to continue reading until I knew what was going on which led me to finishing the book in basically two days.

There are some dark topics, but it is written in a very real way. It feels like this could have been an actual story that has happened.

Thank you again to Crooked Lane Books and Net Gallery but a special thanks to Damien Angelica Walters for written such a great book.

The Dead Girls Club was a supernatural thriller with a creepy urban legend in the middle of it all.
It was told from a then/now POV following Heather, now a children’s psychologist who has a eerie past coming back to haunt her.
I loved the urban legend/supernatural theme throughout the book and how each chapter left you needing more answers.
I did find Heather a bit annoying and once things started going bad everyone crumbled. I did love the ending of this one though.
Read this if you like- urban legends, supernatural thrillers, or psychological thrillers.

REVIEW
The Dead Girls Club by Damien Angelica Walters

.
This book was not at all what I expected. The build up took me a little bit to get into but once I did, I didn’t put it down. I finished this book in less than a day. Forgo laundry and dishes. This was much more important.
.
.
A story of preteen friends and imaginations. Stories you tell to make things seem better or deflect from what’s really going on. We’ve all done it. Our monsters are not as scary as the ones we make up. Our saviors are not as close as the ones we believe in. Friends are there until the end. And sometimes even after.
.
.
A disturbing but enticing witchy supernatural-twist your mind-mystery. Find out what really happens as you are enveloped into the past through flashbacks. What you think is not what happens. Kept me on the edge of my seat until I was finished.

A total page turner at the start - I was so under the spell of the Red Lady. As the book went on, I found Heather harder to deal with and the ending was a bit anti-climactic. Had the makings for a King or Jackson-esque haunt, but lost the thread while trying to ground the story in reality. Still a good read if you’re looking for something a little spooky and fast paced.

The Dead Girls Club by Damien Angelica Walters is an intriguing mystery with supernatural overtones.

Fascinated by serial killers and urban myths, twelve year old Heather Cole,  her best friend Becca Thomas and friends Gia and Rachel form the Dead Girls club. Becca regales her friends with disturbing stories about the Red Lady. The three girls are soon weary of Becca's obsession with the Red Lady and their friendship grows strained. Before long, Rachel and Gia are no longer friends with Becca and Heather.  By summer's end, Becca is dead and although her body is never found, her mother is convicted of her murder. Heather knows more about what happened to Becca than she is saying, but she soon puts what happened to her best friend behind her.

In the present, Heather Cole is a child psychologist and she and her husband Ryan are quite happy. Her uneventful life is suddenly interrupted when her long ago past collides with her present.  After receiving a package in the mail that brings up memories she would rather forget, Heather is desperate to find out who sent it to her and more importantly, why.   Frantic with worry, she makes one disastrous decision after another that affects her career, her marriage and friendships. Will Heather unearth the truth about who is behind the increasingly upsetting events that are occurring?

Heather is very secretive about her past and this does not change as she tries to figure out who is behind what is happening to her. She is distracted at work as she continuously plots her next moves in  her search for answers. Heather is short with Ryan and as events spiral out of control, she grows suspicious of everyone around her. As the situation careens to an explosive and shocking confrontation, Heather has alienated everyone around her. Will she  emerge from a shocking showdown unscathed? And can Heather salvage her career and relationships once the dust has settled?

Alternating between the past and present, The Dead Girls Club is an interesting mystery with a clever storyline. Unfortunately the pacing is slow and Heather is an unlikable protagonist. Her decisions are over the top and unbelievable.  Becca's stories about the Red Lady are initially absorbing, but they soon become rather repetitious. With stunning plot twists, Damien Angelica Walters brings the novel to an action-filled, satisfying conclusion.
