Chrysanthemum loves her name until she starts school and gets teased about it. Her parents and teacher help build up her confidence. Good book to discuss teasing.

This is one of the first books I remember loving with all my heart. I still do. :)

I was looking for audiobooks that Meryl Streep narrated!
This brought back spooo many memories reading this book to my kids. They all 3 loved it. I would try and do voices, Meryl Streep did it better! And I loved the music along with the narration, it matched the story perfectly

A Henkes favorite from my childhood that holds up

Cute illustrations and plot. Could have used this when I was a kid being made fun of for my name, that is for sure. She is an icon!

Chrysanthemum loves her name. Until she gets to school, where she is bullied by other students. A kind and popular teacher is able to sway the opinion of the rest of the class after revealing her own name, and Chrysanthemum in turn lives her name again.
This is a great book to read aloud in the classroom as it deals with topics of bullying and acceptance. Henkes use of language makes for an especially enjoyable read with descriptive phrases and unusual but accessible vocabulary choice. It’s also clear that Henkes really understands people-children and adults alike. From the parents gushing adoration of their newborn, to the sharp words of the bullies, and the quick change of attitude in the children, he paints a very realistic picture, and that makes this especially relatable for readers.

Definitely a rival to Lily's Purple Plastic Purse. Hooray for Kevin Henkes!
