Definitely a rival to Lily's Purple Plastic Purse. Hooray for Kevin Henkes!
Is it okay to be unique? How can a child with a distinctive name learn to accept herself when others tease her? How can those others also learn to accept? This is a sweet personal narrative that can help little ones learn to love who they are.
I wish I had read this book when I was growing up! I didn't like my name because I was worried about not fitting in. Perfect story for embracing the uniqueness of self.
I read this cuz i saw Meryl streep narrated this so there was truly no debate-- i was listening. But......... this didnt sound like meryl at all

One of my favorite picture books since elementary schools. It tells of a little mouse who starts school and she is teased by her classmates because of her long name, which makes her believe her name is not perfect. It’s a sweet and relatable story about being proud of who you are and not letting others make fun of you for it. To me, everything about “Chrysanthemum” is perfect from its lovely art, incredible story and wonderful lesson. A (100%/Outstanding)
Chrysanthemum is unlike the other students in her class. They all have "normal" names, and the other students giggled and make Chrysanthemum feel bad about her unique name. All before starting school she loved her name, but her classmates make her question that identity she has developed. Fortunately, in the end Chrysanthemum realizes that she is in fact amazing and her name is perfect. A perfect anti-bullying book for younger students. Students could work on persuasive writing; why their names are perfect for them.
Pretty sure I had this as a kid and it was one of my favorites.
Of course it's a little dated. We don't tell children they're perfect anymore for obvious reasons. (Calling a toddler and asshole is frowned upon) but it's still a cute one that gives me the warm fuzzies!
