It was cute, but I didn’t like many of the characters. With so many plots moving at one time, it was difficult to get much worthwhile plot or character development. The author did craft a well-thought out alternate history, so props for that element. Overall, not brutal, but didn’t love it and I won’t be reaching for the next in this series in the immediate future.

“Criticism is a good thing, it means you fought for something. The only people free from censure are people who haven’t taken a stand.”
Let me first say, this book may have had the biggest, baddest, sh*t hit the fan ending of any book I’ve read this year. I mean what a culmination that was. It completely snuck up on me.
I’m not often taken that off guard with a plot twist, but I’d been lulled so softy along a track of assumed events for so long, that when things began to go awry, I was like the frog in the slowly boiling pot of water. Everything seemed fine, until it suddenly wasn’t.
Come for the deliciously fantastical idea of an American monarchy, stay for the slow implosion (and rebirth?) of the sharp, witty, heart strong royal family, and the intricate puzzle of people that make up their social circles.
