drama, great. the story overall, not for me. i found it so hard to keep track of who was who at the beginning of the story.

nina sucks and couldn’t stand how insecure she was the whole book. daphne scares me, beatrice is a pushover, and samantha seemed like the only normal character.

I have been meaning to read this book for years, especially after helping students through this book in literature circles in my classroom. So many students love this book (& series) and I knew it was time I dove into this world myself. I'm not a big fan of the English royals. In fact, I often ask what many would say are the simplest questions about the royal family. (Is William a royal? Who is Elizabeth? And Charles? I thought that was part of a bank name?) So, this book is not really written for someone like me who knows nothing about the current modern monarchies. Yet, I found myself having so much fun while listening to this audiobook. I know the basics of how monarchies work (thanks, former social studies teacher moment) and honestly, that's about all you need to know to understand this book. I'm in luck!

Based on an interesting premise: what if America had a rPeigning monarchy? In order of my preference here's all the tropes I saw in this one: best friend's brother, Bodyguard romance, different worlds, crazy ex girlfriend, relationship of obligations/altar diplomacy, secret relationship. So yea there was a lot going on here and it read like a soap. I found the characters were a little one dimensional as well but it was mostly fun to read until it wasn't and I hated the end.

Will pick this back up!

no, just no. the characters are so boring and annoying. “im so quirky” = everyone’s only trait and all of them just blend together.

@the author - it’s not too late to change your career path.

Trash but I love it

Have you ever wondered how America would be if it was a monarch? It never even crossed my mind, and I was so intrigued I knew I had to read this book. I expected a light historical fiction, yet what I got was a book about teen royals whose personalities match those of Gossip Girl: SO MUCH UNNECESSARY DRAMA. Two of the characters remind me of Blair and Chuck, they definitely have that relationship dynamic.

I must say, though, the writing was good, as I can easily picture the setting where the story takes place and I couldn't stop reading once I got through a few chapters. But, wow, I am so damn frustrated over the characters. I think the author already pictured this book to be a series, which is why some characters are depicted less than they can actually be (yes, there are representation of LGBTQ+ and Latina, but come on, they can be stronger characters!).

Despite all my frustrations, I definitely want to read the second book. And so, I rate this book 3 stars.

I think if you read this book expecting historical fiction, be forewarned. This book is more YA drama. I recommend this book if you're looking for a book with teen romance and teen drama, or if you're in the mood for a dose of The Royals/Gossip Girl drama.
