This first entry in the Cat Who series is Braun at her best--funny and sharp. The early, scrappier incarnation of her protagonist, Qwilleran, and his feline friend, Koko, have a humble quality that gives the novel energy. Read Backwards is not only an entertaining murder mystery but also an interesting slice of mid 60s art culture. Highly recommended.

It's been years since I read this book (and the rest of the series), and I was unpleasantly surprised by the misogynistic vibes, especially the repeated descriptions of an Asian woman as "exotic" and the negative attitude towards the presumably lesbian "Butchie." Maybe the author (herself a woman and a journalist) was just like yep, this is what it's like working with reporters?

I remember devouring these books when I was younger. Upon reread it didn't quite live up to my tastes anymore.
The ending is a left field ending with no real developing towards it. All wrapped up too quickly that it felt unsatisfying.
Koko as a character is the highlight..... cam never fault a cat smarter than all the humans in the book.
It's also a victim of reading thru an updated lens. Several lines made me groan like telling a character she would be prettier if she smiled. A lot of space is given to Q thinking about how attractive or unattractive a woman is or how good a certain food item is.
Ultimately this series is just not the thing I remembered it to be... its not terrible but best I leave the fondess for it in nostalgia-land instead of revisiting.

Fantastic series, great intro to it all. My mom and grandma have read zillions of this series(you get my point), and as a result I read some of them as well. Very good mystery series for any age. :)
The cat mannerisms in this book are dead on. Between those descriptions and the way the story is crafted with its various false doors and unexpected ending (well, to a point) I was thoroughly entertained by something I almost did not expect to be altogether great at the onset.
