Funny, action-packed, gory, heartbreaking, breathtaking.

"Gideon the Ninth" absolutely blew me away! The world-building is utterly bleak and incredibly built, taking its magic system of necromancy and exploring it to every gruesome and bitter end. Not to mention, pairing it with incredible swordplay!! The duo I never knew I desperately needed.

The magic and swordsmanship are absolutely visceral, every cinematic detail rending page after page in an unflinching and humorous narrative voice. I found myself physically squirming as I read, thoroughly grossed-out and completely entranced. Hell, I read the last 150 pages in a day because I couldn't put it down! It was a complete roller coaster that made me laugh, cry, and bite my nails in anticipation. When I finished this book, I immediately put in an order for the sequel.

I absolutely commend Tamsyn Muir for her excellent craftsmanship. The action, the mystery, the palpable secrecy, the emotional turmoil... it's all woven together seamlessly. I was captivated. I actually plan on rereading this book to take notes, Muir's writing is so amazing!

Now, this book won't be for everyone (mainly because of the gore), but if you can stomach it, I highly recommend giving it a read!

Honestly I was very confused for most of the book but enjoyed the heck out of it! I need to re-read it to fully appreciate the story. The characters are truly unique and continue to surprise you. As the cover says, it’s full of lesbian necromancers and fighters!

Murder mystery in space with delightfully morbid necromancers and their sword-wielding companions! Lots of characters are introduced in a short period of time around the beginning to middle of the book, but boy is this a lovable cast full of some wonderfully diverse personalities. Our protag, Gideon Nav, is hilarious and quippy while simultaneously showing a devastatingly real and relatable side... a side which sets her apart from a lot of other fantasy and sci-fi protagonists. The mystery aspect of the story was ever-evolving and the discoveries made by this cast of makeshift detectives throughout the investigation were genuinely surprising and kept me hooked. However, something that bothered me throughout the whole book was that there were several instances where I couldn't tell who was speaking in a scene, which broke my immersion. For example, there would be several lines of dialogue in a row each separated with an indentation, but oftentimes, it would be difficult to tell which character spoke first or there would be little indication of who was part of the interaction at all, making it hard to follow the conversation as a whole. But overall, the story was a rollercoaster of a dark adventure through an ancient and... somewhat decrepit palace in space, and I can't wait to move on to Harrow the Ninth very soon!!

This book shouldn't work. The world-building is threadbare and confusing to the point of illegibility, the characters' motivations and actions are sometimes nonsensical, the dialogue is both corny, hilarious, irreverent, and at times timeless and elegant. The true plot doesn't surface until about halfway through the book, and the ending leaves almost no questions answered, and sacrifices one of your favorite characters into a seriously morally questionable relationship.

And yet I frickin loved it. I don't know what that says about me, but I did. It took me a minute to understand what the heck was happening, and even longer to recover from that horrendously cut-off ending, but once I did, I was in. I just wish Gideon was gonna feature more in future books.

A definite new favourite. There were moments that I found myself losing motivation, waiting for something to happen. But, once everything clicked together, the action really jump started and I found myself almost unable to put it down. So excited to re-read this over and over, hopefully discovering more with every read.
