Definitely the best book of the Wildnerness series so far.

Boom! Read number 5 in what is now my favourite series ever. Grieving that I only have one more to go. As usual, I learn about history, war, writing and the human heart.

Very odd to read a book that so clearly wins up a series. So often you wonder what happened to everyone and here you know. I'm not sure whether I like it or not. Plot comes close to overwhelming character which is not my favourite.

My least favorite of the series for a few reasons: war - unh - what is it good for? Absolutely nothin. And this book focuses a lot of the War of 1812. I thought that the parts of the story in New Orleans were very interesting and compelling - when they focused on the Bonners and Savards. Unfortunately we get a lot of unnecessary chapters from Kit Wyndam and Honore Poiterin which I pretty much just skipped altogether. Also, just too long in general (which also happens in the Outlander books).

This book is strong in two ways: its continuation of the Bonner family saga, and its exploration of America in all its white supremacist & colonial ugliness. I am so happy to finally return to Lake in the Clouds next time, though, and just hope it lives up to my expectations!

I have a love hate relationship with this series. The more I read the more I think, "THAT IS IMPOSSIBLE." But the more I read I just come to love the Bonner family more and more. The plot is a bit ridiculous and is a bit of a stretch for me but the character development and detail of the plot and the world Donati creates around the family makes up for it.

I didn't know this was part of a series- but even though this is book 5 I enjoyed it for itself.
Well-formed characters that I connected with and a new insight into a historical battle.
For fans of Hamilton, this could be a winner.

The only reason this didn't get 4 stars was b/c I was a little disappointed that this book focused only on Hannah/Luke/Jennet and told very little of the Lake in the Clouds family.
