Very simple and often quite childish prose. Absolute tearjerker towards the end!

I'm quite impressed with this book. The fact that a book about war (told from the point of view of a horse, no less) kept me interested until the very end - even had me thinking about it when I wasn't reading - surprises me a lot. And the book really opened my eyes to the world of war, which I don't have a lot of experience with since I rarely read war time books. Another thing I liked is that the character of Joey the horse is very likeable. I found myself cheering for him all through the book; I really wanted him to succeed. The characters who are friends to Joey were also very real and likeable. Great read!

Children’s book, but has a great message behind it

I went to see War Horse on stage recently and wanted to read/listen to the original story so I could compare. The show was good but it felt lacking in some way.

This was wonderful to listen too, got me all teary at parts. Different to the show, but I can see why it wouldn't have worked on stage having the horse be the narrator. I honestly preferred the story of the book to the stage script (but nothing beats those puppets really).

I feel like the end was a bit lackluster maybe, but I'm glad it wasn't a horribly sad ending. Bittersweet I'd say.

A great, quick read or listen, heartwarming and heartbreaking. Can't ask for more.

Didn't enjoy the BBC production. I prefer a non dramatise version
