I'm amazed that this author made me care so deeply for some of the most self-absorbed assholes that I've read about in a while. Like, I'm going to be thinking about the Oppenheimers everyday for the foreseeable future. Love!

I enjoyed hearing the stories of the different generations and liked the book despite how unlikeable many of the characters were at the beginning.

I am not saying it's a good or bad book, It was not for me.
I thought it will be a real mystery, but it turned out to be the story of a family written in a very long and detailed way. The mystery side is pretty tiny and insignificant.
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio. for allowing me to read this book!

I feel aggressively neutral about this book. I enjoyed it fine while reading it, but got bored before the latecomer actually showed up in the plot and wanted to fast forward to the conclusion. I feel like everything the author wanted to do felt a little half baked and spread thin. Pretty forgettable.

I thought this would be in similar tone to The Plot but I couldn’t have been more wrong - in the best way! This was a beautifully written detailed story about one family - theirs flaws and their humanity and the bonds (or lack there of) that were forged and reforged. This book took its time painting a vivid and detailed picture of each character and the paths they took throughout their lives. Enjoyed every minute of it and found myself often yelling, laughing or crying at the characters for their decisions and the outcomes. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a slow burn that’s well written and very satisfying. Bonus for those that choose to listen as it’s narrated by Julia Whelan who is always fantastic.

I did not expect to love this. It was read by Julia Whelan which was a good sign though.
It was very Pachinko-esk, but with fewer generations. I cried at the end. It was messy and complicated and full of love and grief. Just an overview of life for a random disjointed family that has suffered tragedy and seen amazing things happen.
The amount of content warnings in a story like that though - woof. It is looonnnnngggggg.

3.5 stars. As in The Plot, Korelitz’s previous book, The Latecomer takes it time to get going. The author delves deeply into each character and while I remained interested in this highly dysfunctional family full of mostly loathsome people, it was no page turner….until it was. I’m glad I stayed with it until the end.
