Despite the unlikeable characters, I enjoyed this read, particularly the third section. I wish the characters or their relationships drew me in more, but I was still interested enough.
I listened to The Latecomer on audiobook because I really like the narrator (Julia Whelan - she narrated The Wife Between Us, and I thought she did a great job). Unfortunately, a great narrator doesn’t make up for a mediocre book. I found all of the characters to be pretty insufferable, and the audiobook was about four hours too long. I do see how people could like The Latecomer, though, and I think I might have enjoyed it more if I read the print version. It’s more of a character driven (as opposed to plot driven) novel that follows a family over the course of 40 years. I think I just got bored with it, and the characters weren’t intriguing enough for me to be invested in how things would turn out for them.
Certainly well-written, not the most dynamic plot though. Took a long build for a fairly predictable conclusion

This book was very descriptive heavy especially in the beginning. I couldn’t understand why the triplets disliked each other so much and even wanted to get far away from their mother. I enjoyed some parts, their time in college, but it also got too political and religious.
I know people loved it so don't judge just on my review. I didn't care for it at all. There are very few books that I can say that about after reading. It was incredibly wordy. Even after the first 5 chapters I just wanted it to get to the point. Reading it was a chore. The plot seems slow to develop and the characters are shallow and uninteresting. I was hoping it would get better and give me that "I can't put it down feeling." I kept reading and finished. I was really frustrated with it.

Best book I've read in 2023. The writing is exquisite and the story grabbed me from the start. Family drama and generational genre at its best.
This is a story of redemption. I had a hard time getting into this book. Almost returned it without finishing it but I stuck with it and I'm glad I did. A lot of unlikable characters at the beginning of the book. Not all characters were redeemed but I liked where things ended.
