Oesterheld and Lopez' personal histories alongside Argentina's during their life time are just as interesting and tragic as this 1957-59 weekly comic itself. I love how the late '50s science fiction was used as a foil to write about the fears of politics and the Cold War. The Eternaut is awesome and, uh, eternal.

Viva Juan Salvo!

By turns horribly bleak and then suddenly, over and over again filled with the power of human resistance, The Eternaut is one of those graphic works that has so much more going on with it than what appears on the surface that you need to read it to grasp it. Created in Argentina in the late 50's, it is published here in English for the first time, and is an adventure that can be enjoyed by anyone whether they're open to the metaphorical political message or not. Without that, this would be like a long-form Twilight Zone episode adapted for an EC horror comic by Will Eisner, and you can see how that could still bring in the reader, casual or not.

A monumental work that's been influencing comics as a medium for decades... and yet it's so freaking dull and slow. You can definitely see that it was a serialized strip and the repetitive middle section drags on way past its welcome. Still, the designs are really cool, the concepts introduced are fresh, and it'd be insane to deny that it's an important book. It's just not that fun to read past the excellent 100 first pages. I do recommend giving at least an obligatory look-through as the art (especially on characters' faces is top-notch) and the themes are still timely and relevant.
