Having read RJBs Divine Cities series, the dramaticism of the culmination of this book wasn't unexpected, but it captured everything one would have wanted.

After the cliffhanger of Shorefall, the book paints a bleak picture of the setting, yet with flashes of hope and idealism within what remains of Sancia and Berenice's peoples. The book develops further on what occurred in the past for Clef and Crasedes, and turns the conflict on its head. Personal development is at an all time high in this final book, and I found myself enraptured by characters I did not expect to be captured by.

The ending, as expected by the tone of this book series, was apt and bittersweet, with the final battle a large, epic spanning battle that wouldn't be out of place in another fantasy novel. Well worth the read. Not for the faint of heart.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first book and while the second book wasn't as amazing to me as book 1, It was still fun. Book 3 on the other hand suffers from something I see often with fantasy writers... The story just gets too big and the stakes too large and eventually it's hard to make the reader care. The magic also became much to complicated and the logic inherent in the early skrivings disappeared. I don't understand why Bernice ended up alone 😭

initially it was a bit tough to get through and follow - the 8 year time skip didn’t help, and there was a bit too much action at times. but the third act really saved it, the backstory reveals for crasedes and clef were intense and emotional, and the wrap up was beautifully bittersweet. i do wish we had more sancia pov near the end though, considering she is, well, the main character.

It was okay. Honestly, my main issue was with the character development, which took a bit of a disappointing nosedive. Which sucks, because I was pretty excited for this book.

I had noticed in Foundryside and Shorefall that despite having a rather diverse collection of different characters (age, experiences, perspectives), all the character voices sound the same. It didn't bother me so much in the first two books, but it almost made me dnf the Locklands. How am I supposed to believe that Sancia, Berenice, and Co escaped and made their own country within the eight years since Shorefall? It's not the logistics that are strange to me but the fact that neither of them seem particularly changed since this experience and the upheaval of their world system. They should at least sound older or something. And the people around them who are younger and older just don't sound their age. It's like everyone's stuck in their teens and early twenties.

Characters aside, the world building, which was the one of the most interesting elements in this series took a bunch of wierd turns that I'm so glad were properly explored.
