Relatable, gorgeous, breathtaking, sweet, heart-achingly good.
Bit scattered, but that was intended. little over the top at times, but that just was a reflection of emotions so it fit.

this is full of heavy, triggering content which the cover, description and YA writing style do not prepare you for (imo the latter clashes with the actual story at times). perhaps some topics were not handled as sensitively as they could have been, especially with a young target audience, especially as the author is white. i also wish we got to see more of the protagonists' growth and healing after the events that transpire. more of the protagonists' lives in general.

otherwise i rly liked this and how historically accurate it made an effort to be (if i may say that as a 2000s baby..).

Wow. This book. Hit more to the core.

I will admit, I was a but thrown off in the beginning with Brandon's writing style. The random bold words, italic words, wordsstrungtogether and ALL CAPS put me off at first. But once you get in, it fits perfectly with the time period of the groovy 70s and the mental state that Jonathan is in. The slang the characters speak, the Vietnam war and the social injustices of the Native Americans, weaves together such a natural and believable story.

Jonathan is going through shock treatment to "cure" his queer sexuality. This ride with Jonathan through his treatments, his relationship with his best friend, to his father issues and first love was such a rollercoaster of emotions.

I applaud Brandon for such a a beautiful and heartbreaking story and showing us how far we've come as a society while making us remember where we once were. I look forward to see further works from this talented new comer.

I had to read this for a college class and wow did this book kind of blow me away. It's so good at showing how it was during the time it's set in and it left me both wanting to know what happens next and yet satisfied with the end.
I also really enjoyed the way it was written, it felt very dream-like in a way at times, like a fever dream yet it can hit you over the head with reality just as hard and it made the book a very compelling right for me.
If you've not read it, give it a try. I promise it's worth it.
