Another fantastic book from Karin Slaughter who is underrated in the pantheon of great thriller authors. In her last book we were teased with glimpses of Maggie Lawson early days in the Atlantic police force. In this stand-alone, we are back in 1974 when the Atlanta police force reflects the changes happening in society -- much to the dismay of its entrenched membership. This is the backdrop to a taut thriller about the search for a serial killer -- a cop killer. this book is the very definition of a page Turner, but one with a depth to its characters that raises it above all but the very best in the genre.

Not my favorite Slaughter book. As usual she put together a great story with challenging themes that reflects the demons that still live within our current society.
What brought down the rating was the unveiling of the shooter. For me, the explanation of what led him to becoming a criminal was too pat. The way he is described before the identity is revealed compared to after falls a bit flat. Or maybe it's because im too afraid to admit that it's a probable outcome in the current political environment.
That I'm wrestling with the outcome means it deserves at least another quarter star.
This book will leave you pondering how recent the US's shamed past really is.

I really like Karin's writing...usually. The first book of hers that I read, I was hooked! I'm glad this wasn't the first of hers I picked up, as there wouldn't be another. This book was hard to get hooked into and I didn't really enjoy it (if you could call it that) until about 45% of the way in. Hard to remember that this was a book written to take place in the 1970's...the writing doesn't give that away until the man is beating on his niece, or they are throwing out racial epithets or derogatory names for women. Just felt confused although the last 15% of the book charged ahead full speed and was action packed...but still fell short. Disappointing.
