Cop Town

Karin Slaughter

3.78 AVERAGE

Karin Slaughter never fails. Although this was written as a stand alone book, I'd really like to revisit these characters and this era again.

Five stars, even though I wasn't crazy about the ending, which was a little too quick to tidy up and make nice after the requisite four-alarm crisis.

It gets five stars, howver, for the compelling picture Slaughter paints of the Atlanta PD in the 1970s: the hidden shames and secrets, the rampant racism and sexism, the period details. Dialogue is first-rate, and very believable. Issues bubble up as a means of exploring deep societal change. It's clear to Slaughter that people think much differently now than they did four decades ago--all the reasons it's a radically changed world are supported in the telling of the story.

The plotting has some wobbles, and occasionally the cast of characters is so long that it's hard to remember who's a cop, who's a good guy for real, who's related to whom, and why these (colorfully drawn) people are necessary to the story. Although the book is 400 pages long, it could easily have been longer, or split into two books. It's wonderful to have two female cops--it must have been a fun book to write. Kate and Maggie deserve to have more story, a longer partnership--this could easily be the beginning of a new series.

I really hated a lot of the characters, but I was supposed to hate them.

I listened to the audio version. The narrator is excellent. Karin does a fantastic job capturing the atmosphere and culture of 1970s Atlanta in this book. The racism, sexism, bigotry, class warfare, and the technology of the period are spot on. She did such a great job I was so pissed off at the way the women cops were being treated at the start of the book I almost stopped listening to it. Then, the women started taking on power for themselves, and I couldn’t stop rooting for them.

Karin also puts in some real and IMO accurate sex scenes in her book that help to add depth and humanity to her characters.

The murder mystery is really well plotted also, and the ending is extremely satisfying. Definitely an enjoyable read.

All new characters, set in 1975...I think my readers will really enjoy this one. It was a lot of fun to work on and I talked to a lot of interesting folks for research. Don't worry--another Will and Sara is around the corner. A girl has to have some fun!

This book was good not as gripping as some of her others but still good.

I finished two books on the second day of 2021 - and they were both great!
I am normally not a big fan of thrillers or mystery novels, so I was very surprised when this story grabbed me as much as it did. The story was difficult to start, because of all the triggering language directed towards POC, queer people, and Jewish people, the story was soaked in a depressing tone that, thankfully, made a place for a more feminist approach from the main characters.
