In Slaughter's previous novel "Criminal," she wove together past and present narratives. The past narrative was the story of GBI chief Amanda Wagner's early years on the Atlanta police force, a time when women were few and far between on the force and they faced as many challenges from their male colleagues as from criminals. Slaughter returns to this same fodder for her latest novel "Cop Town," this time keeping the entire narrative in the past. Again, much of the story is about the introduction of women into the Atlanta police force, which aligns well with the homophobia theme that emerges during the investigation. Modern readers may have some trouble with the violence and discrimination against women, but Slaughter is relentless in offering an unblinking portrait of the period.
As in all her novels, Slaughter paints Atlanta in bright and authentic colors full of interesting, complex and brilliantly flawed characters that you cannot help but care about. These characters drive the novel and make it compelling. Readers familiar with Slaughter's work will enjoy the latest edition to her collection and new readers will find a new favorite author.

This was a stand alone book by one of my favorite crime writers. Karin Slaughter does a great job of building suspense and telling a story. My only criticism is the rampant misogyny, racism, and violence...I understand this is the language of the time (1974) in a police force....but it is hard to read at times.
Graphic: Racial slurs, Violence
Took me back to Criminal in the Will Trent series. I love seeing the woman do the work! Karin Slaughter nailing it as always. Loved this one.
