i actually liked this??? this is my first reading historical romances, and it was surprisingly fun and easy to get through.

it's a bit, "she's not like the other girls" and very smut heavy, which ironically enough, i do not like to read 💀 but the book was too good for me to dnf so i just... read it anyway. this is officially a guilty pleasure i indulged myself in.

the key, i think, is to not take anything seriously. at all. because there were problems. a lot of them.

gabriel grew on me, and callie wasn't my favourite character, but i did appreciate how great they were together, so kudos for that.

honourable mentions to benny, mari, and juliana for being great siblings.
lighthearted

I loved the premise but the heroine's endless crying and self-pity were irritating and the hero wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer. Some ridiculous things happened. A book not without problems, but I was hooked by the writing--it was engaging, clever and fun.

Well I've fallen down a Sarah MacLean rabbit hole and now I'm going to read her whole backlist and feel NO SHAME.

1/5

now this was a doozy. I really needed something good, something with guaranteed happiness after a crappy day. but this book just pissed me all the way off

it had so much potential. I liked the writing, the banter, the chaos, the side characters, etc. BUT the only thought that kept racing thru my mind anytime Callie did anything was,,

STAND UP!!!

this woman was on her HANDS AND KNEES,, NO, SHE WAS BENEATH THE EARTH'S CRUST, LICKING THIS DUDES BOOTS FROM BENEATH THE GROUND

My sister in christ,,,, GET TF UPPP it pains me to see a woman THIS unwell over a M*N

Ralston would literally do or say some of the most deplorable, downright foul things and Callie would be like "omg,,, i made such a mess of things! I'm so plain, why doesn't he like me... I've loved him for a decade." immediately no. just no.

when Callie finally told Ralston about their first meeting a decade ago when he first called her empress and he's like "lol I don't remember that"... idk why I was shocked but I thought MAYBE he could be redeemed somehow. maybe he HAD remembered and had harbored some subconscious pining for her ever since. that would have made this book slightly more bearable. but he literally did not remember her, and this scene was in the epilogue

Amaziiiing! The Marquess of Ralston has my heart!! I loved this. It’s been so long since a romance has made me smile so much, had me running to the book every chance I had, and bringing me to tears! It was longer than the romances I’m used to, but there was a lot that had to happen - Callie had a list of things she wanted to do with her life so! Speaking of Callie, I personally related to her so much. I saw myself. Hers and Gabriel’s love story was dramatic, an emotional rollercoaster, and full of hope for them both. 4.5 stars ❤️

Edit: Finished this in the morning and it’s now evening, but I’m still thinking about it.
