I really wanted to like this. Great characters, world and ideas, as well as a great story actually. Fantastic diversity of representation. But unfortunately after some genuinely fascinating world-building at the start, everything fell flat for me. It’s weirdly written with crazily paced sentences which make it hard to read, the plot pacing is all over the place, and after a certain point I found what could have been fantastically intriguing and involving just very hard to care about. The ideas are fantastic, the execution really not for me.

DID NOT FINISH

Tried really hard but eventually DNF'd. Feel very terrible about it too.
I desperately want to like this book. I love the concepts, I love the ideas Kaner presents and the worldbuilding is very interesting. Skedi is a very interesting little God and I enjoyed his POVs the most of all of them. The prologue is absolutely stellar and it's always wonderful to see a queer-normative worldbuild. I like the potential for conflict between gods and man.

But this book peters out, and when it does it becomes a hard slog to keep going with. The pacing falls off in the middle, where the majority of the story is just travelling as a group. It switches between multiple POVs across this travelling, but when no POV really drives the story anywhere it becomes difficult to keep going. The cast needs more driving force.
I appear to be in the minority, but I found Skedi and Kissen's stories to be the most compelling, and Elogast's the least. But it would have been nice to have the great punch of the beginning be kept up throughout so I could feel interested in all of the cast's stories.

Overall, I wish I could like and enjoy this book more. But it isn't for me.

"Godkiller" is a bright debut by Hannah Kaner.
It has some beloved tropes but with a breath fresh interpretation to them.
There is the heroine that is rough around the edges, the mysterious child and the knight that has put away his sword.
There are also plenty of gods and lore for fans of mythology, a queer normative setting, great disability representation and some hints of larger politics at play.
My only concern was the twist, it was difficult to believe, but I have faith that the author will explore the "why" in more depth in the next installment.
I am so glad I gave this book another chance. (The chapter about baking was what sold me into it.) Not only I was in an appropriate mood this time around, but it was a great read for the autumn season.

I enjoyed this book but I think the switching of different pov‘s just isn’t my preferred style of writing.

This was a slow burn at first, I wasn’t sure I would get hooked, but I’m very intrigued by the world and its power dynamics, and I adore all the main characters.
