This was a reread for me. The first time, I read it as an e-book, which isn't my preferred method of reading, and I thought it may have affected my enjoyment. This time, I read it physically, and I very much felt the same way. There is something about the pacing and format that had me really struggling both times to get into the story. I think it was a combination of the multiple POVs combined with the information on the war between the gods and the fall of Blenraden that made it hard to get into. I really love how it started, but I think an extension at the start that covered the war and information on it would have worked better for the story as a whole. While I loved Inara and Sekdiceth, their POVs as a whole didn't really add anything to the story, and I honestly would often forget who I was following when it was their chapters and would have to double check. That said, I really enjoyed the different characters, and once the four were together, I was able to enjoy the story a bit more. I think now that the groundwork was done in this book, I will hopefully be able to enjoy the other two books even more than this one since I really l do love the characters and overall vibes and premise.

Godkiller is a fun and exciting fantasy novel set in an original and interesting setting where Gods are real and their relationships with human society and one another has had major impacts on the magic, culture, and politics of the setting. I have two nitpicks, and they’re more personal taste things than much else. One is that there are some pretty big questions that go unanswered by the end (presumably to become important plot points in the rest of the trilogy) that did make the book worse than some other first-in-a-series fantasy novels that I really love. (A bit of a pet peeve of mine is when individual novels of a series don’t feel contained enough to be separate books. Like, if that’s the case, then maybe you should compress the first two novels into one and cut out less essential chapters.) The other nitpick is that the resolution of the journey that takes up the whole book is very flat. The characters don’t learn anything they didn’t already know, which was a bummer - though it was followed immediately by a major and very satisfying climax to two of the OTHER major sub-plots. To be clear, these are nitpicks - I really quite enjoyed the book! The characters are archetypes but they are well-drawn and compelling, the plot has good forward momentum, and it’s full of lovely little details with plenty of interesting worldbuilding. I am definitely going to continue the series.

The best part were the epilogue and the cover art. The first chapter was fine too.
I struggled most with the pacing of this book, in particular how fast the characters changed their opinion. I also found the romance to be unbelievable.
Overall, I just didn't care about anything that happened in the story... The twist weren't shocking, and I didn't care if people died or not... The thing is, there is nothing wrong with the story, but it's just not remarkable... there is nothing that catches my attention. With so many fantasy books available, I have no reason to continue with the series, unfortunately...
The writing was okay, but nothing that sticks with me for longer.
It’s marketed towards adults. However, some parts read very YA to me.

The writing in this book is so beautiful and lyrical but it took me so much brain power to understand the world and the intricacies of it that I didn’t enjoy myself as much as I have with other fantasy books in my collection.
That being said, I fell in love with all the main characters in godkiller and will absolutely be continuing the series! Now o understand the world and the plot I think I’ll really enjoy it. Do not be fooled by the length of this book, it takes a long time to read!

How? How does a book that doesn't even surpass the 300 page mark make me care about the characters within SO MUCH?! I would turn violent for all of our POV characters, I swear to god
