Flat, boring and painfully dull. This book takes far too long to do anything; it spends the entire first chapter describing old mate's house, only for him to leave immediately. It was a painful read, and the story didn't make up for how uninteresting it all was. I nearly couldn't finish this. Awful.

Such a gripping, dark and mysterious book. I could barely bring myself to put it down once I started reading it - I read this in less than three days! The journey of the main character and the story he unveiled about the woman in black kept me glued to the the pages of the book. I have felt tense, with my heart beating fast, the entire time reading this book, its words flowing so gently and fast in front of my eyes. I felt that the end was quite predictable and this is the only reason why I’ve deducted a star off my ranking, otherwise a great book! Now I’m very intrigued about the film and play adaptations, which I’ll hopefully watch very soon!

Paapa Essiedu is a fantastic narrator for this tale

Listened to on audio. I think this is an excellent introduction into the Gothic horror genre for me, it's very atmospheric. Something hard to come by these days. I can see and feel the weather in it. But I do have fond childhood attachment to the film and the play adaptations so this may be why.
It also keeps the plot pulled as tight as possible with Gothic elements and bulkier language, so strikes a nice balance. The plot went at a nice pace too, revealing more towards the end.
It kept my interest pretty steady all the way throughout and the language flowed beautifully.
In a lovely way, it feels like a book from the early Victorian period

This book was recommended to me by a co-worker and I really like it. Good classic ghost story. It may not be for everyone with the pace of the story and how it plays heavily on atmosphere and mood. But, I did enjoy the story and hope the movie will be as good.
