The tension in this book was delicious, but I have one big problem, which is that Arthur stays in this house simply because the book needs him to stay in this house. As the flashlight and car make clear, this is not the 1800s. This is not Castle Dracula, tucked deep into the Transylvanian mountains. Every chapter, I found myself asking, “Why is he not packing up these papers and bringing them back with him? Why is he reading them there?”
Hill actually undermines her own logic here, starting off by the pony ride taking so long that Arthur feels he has no choice but to stay in the house, yet later he can easily make that same trek on bicycle? With a dog running beside him the whole time? So if that’s the case, he could have clearly biked back every evening, except again, Hill needs him to be there, so he just…doesn’t.

This was such a great audiobook! Story was good and creepy, ugh and that end killed me, but the star was for sure this production
This book is touted as a take on the classic English ghost story, and it delivers. Hill manages to consistently leave her reader with that lingering sense of foreboding that defines a classic gothic genre ghost story.
I wouldn't necessarily call this book terrifying. Creepy and unsettling are probably better words. It left me feeling unsettled. That ending, though! Whew!

An absolute classic ghost story. This is a truly atmospheric and chilling read where the prose envelops you in the book. The imagery is vivid and engaging. Excellent horror, for me, is where you’re more afraid of what isn’t there than what is. Hill does an excellent job of this. A must read!

What an emphatic last line! This had me making involuntary, nasty faces when The Woman was described, especially when her malevolent nature is at its height.
This book was not scary, and this is coming from someone who finds everything scary. The book is just tedious. The main character is dull, and the use of fog to build suspense was too overused. Also, basically nothing happens until the last 5 pages, and the ending just felt like a cop-out to me. I am sorry Ms. Hill but this was a waste of my gd time.
