Absolutely loved this book. Actually made me feel some sort of “goosebumps” at times. Definitely stick it out till the end for a gruesome twist!

A short but enjoyable classic English ghost story.

The main character, a no nonsense  working man in London, travels to the English countryside where he faces unimaginable, paranormal forces that leave him desperate to uncover a decades old story of what happened in the small, country town and leaves him a changed man, with a shockingly sad ending.

Enjoyed how it started and ended with the main character as an old man, telling the story of decades past.

Looking for a spine chilling ghost story for the month of November now that Halloween is over? Look no further than this stunningly written short ghost story.
It is truly haunting and hard not to get sucked into. I do recommend reading during the day though!

Oh my lord this was creepy! I had to put it down last night as reading it in the dark was actually giving me goosebumps.

“There was no expression on her face and yet I felt all over again the renewed power emanating from her, the malevolence and hatred and passionate bitterness. It pierced me through.”

Wow, I’m stunned by Susan Hill’s incredible plot and prose- I was completely immersed in the atmosphere and mood throughout the tale. When the narrator was terrified in the darkness, frozen in fear- so was I! Absolutely incredible to find myself deeply and viscerally intertwined with this gothic horror story.

“I have always liked to take a breath of the evening, to smell the air, whether it is sweetly scented and balmy with the flowers of midsummer, pungent with the bonfires and leaf-mould of autumn, or crackling cold from frost and snow.
I like to look about me at the sky above my head, whether there are moon and stars or utter blackness, and into the darkness ahead of me;
I like to listen for the cries of nocturnal creatures and the moaning rise and fall of the wind, or the pattering of rain in the orchard trees, I enjoy the rush of air towards me up the hill from the flat pastures of the river valley.”

Not particularly scary for me, actually. Can't believe I finished the whole story in 5 hours.
